New Legislation for Tax and BAS Service Providers

The bookkeeping industry is finally being regulated, under the new Tax Agent Services Act 2009. There will now be:

• a national Board to replace the existing state-based Boards
• a requirement for entities providing BAS services to have a minimum qualification and to register with the national board
• a legislated Code of Professional Conduct (Code) to govern tax agents and BAS agents
• a wider and more flexible range of disciplinary sanctions which may be imposed by the Board
